RIP The Little White Pup

Katie and Matt Blog

Many of you know about my truck – a white pick-up truck, known as the Pup. Pup really is the name of the truck, like Dodge Ram, or Chevy Tahoe.

I got the Pup when I was in high school 14 years ago. Bought it brand new. And I have apparently driven it to death now.

The engine blew up on me during the drive home the other day. Right in the middle of bumper to bumper rush hour traffic. All I heard was a muffle boom from in the engine, and then a horrible, loud clanging noise that increased as I accelerated.

I managed to limp the Pup home, and called my Dad (our family’s auto expert) to get a diagnosis. It was bad – threw a rod.

Lots of memories in the truck. But, the transmission is going, the door won’t open right all the time, the A/C hasn’t worked for years, the top speed was about 60 mph, and the windshield was cracked all the way across. Maybe it was time to retire it, anyway.

But I got 160,000 miles out of it. Not bad. The weird thing is, the only thing I EVER prayed for that truck was that I wouldn’t get hurt if it threw a rod. I’ve prayed that a few times over the last 4 years or so. I believe that God still speaks to us in many ways today, but this seems to be some proof to me that sometimes even the subtle impressions we get every once and a while can be Him guiding us.

How Cool Is Too Cool?

Blue Mesa Grill Dallas

We were stuck in North Dallas, hungry. I wanted some Mexican food, so we headed down 75 to find a place to eat. We remembered this place called Blue Mesa Grill that had looked good. So we decided to go there.

I have to say that walking up to the door made me wonder “are we cool enough to go in here?” On top of that, you enter in the front door and there are three flights of stairs to go up. That means it’s a really cool place. I thought they would take one look at us and kick us out.

But, this is Texas, and even the cool places are friendly. And the food was excellent. The funny thing was that I had been to Santa Fe on a business trip a few weeks ago and we tried to find a place like this, but failed. We found a good place, but it wasn’t the style that we were looking for really. Blue Mesa was – southwestern.

We topped that off by going to a container store (yes, a whole store for just containers) and a MASSIVE Barnes & Nobles. I mean, massive. Once again, I must have looked like a hick, just gawking at the big city. Two stories, with it’s own escalators right in the middle. A music section, a movie section, and rows for every section of books (versus the few selves for each “section” that they had in Waco). This was the Mecca of bookstores, for sure.

A Time For Change

Katie and Matt Blog

Our new newsletter is up, with the big news in it. If you don’t have the password to see it, we will be sending it out soon, along with a text version of the newsletter. We spent the weekend making more progress on the house. The laundry room finally has a new floor, and a lot more of the molding has been finished in the front bedroom and the back living room.

Finally a Small Vacation

Katie and Matt Blog

We had a great time this last weekend on a trip to Round Rock and San Antonio. San Antonio is one of our favorite cities to visit in Texas. All we really do is hang out on the River-walk and eat, but we love it. We actually took the River-walk boat tour this year, though. We have some big news to announce soon, so we’ll have a newsletter or an announcement here or something out soon (we hope 🙂 ) But, just to stop any rumors, we are not pregnant. It’s something else.

Teaching at Night ATS

Katie and Matt Blog

We’ve probably been spending most of our time doing Night ATS stuff recently. We are having a fund raiser this week-end – a chili cook-off. And I (Matt) am going to be teaching one night next week, so I am busily trying to get an outline, and a PowerPoint, and even a website ready by then (Am I over-doing it, maybe?). Hopefully, we will get back to the house by Halloween weekend.

Update on Life

Three new sections are up and running now… running where, I don’t know, but… “Matt’s art” is fully ready to go, there are a few links on the “Links” page, and “Our House” now at least has a map and pictures of our kitchen work in progress. We found out our destination for our school trip, and, well, it’ not what we wanted. I don’t know if we can say yet what it is though, but more details will be coming.
