Getting Ready For the Holidays

Katie and Matt Blog

Another project that is taking all of my free time is transferring all my sites over to WordPress blogs.  I just like the flexibility of WordPress over the other options that I’ve used.  This site used to be a on self-designed program.  Like, one that I created myself from scratch.  That was fun, but got tiring really quick to add new features.  The EduGeek blog was in a program called Moodle, and I am now in the process of transferring that.  Then it is on to move my two forgotten personal blogs in to one WordPress blog.  I also transferred our two personal profiles to WordPress blogs, even though we don’t blog in them.  WP also makes an excellent content management system.

One of my other upcoming projects that I will hopefully get to soon is to update this blog so that we can run it through our iPhones and update as we travel, not after we get back.  iPhones are just cool that way.

Recent Activities and Presentations

Katie and Matt Blog

Sorry for the inactivity here while I updated to a new blog software. WordPress is so nice. I was trying to write my own blog code, but with thousands of them already out there – why re-invent the wheel?

Anyway, our life has continued on and hopefully we can get to posting some updates here shortly. Katie is going to be defending her dissertation on July 2nd! I’ll let her blog about that in the future, but after that she will be “Dr. Crosslin.”

I have been doing some presentations recently. In March, I went to Galveston to present on “Effective Instructional Design Techniques in Moodle and Second Life” at the annual Texas Distance Learning Association conference. Not too exciting unless you are in to that stuff, but you can see my PowerPoint on this page if you want. There are also a couple pics of me presenting on this page.

This month I went to Park City, Utah to present at the National University Telecommunications Network’s 2008 conference. I have a bunch of beautiful pics and even a couple of quick video clips that I will post soon. I presented on “Future of the Internet: Web 3.0 and 3D Web.” That was fun and interesting. See more information on this page.

One More Degree Down, Two More To Go

Katie and Matt Blog

I finally walked the stage for my Master’s Degree this weekend! We had a good time in Brownsville. Now time for a breather (for me) before heading on tothe next level. Katie is still tearing away at her Ph.D. Hopefully, I can get some pics and/or video up here soon.

BTW, I have also noticed that the comments function is on the fritz. Not sure why, yet, but I’ll look in to it. If you want to leave a comment, you can go into the archives section and use the older comments section there. It still seems to like me.

Update: I think the comments stuff is now working. Just an FYI for all of those that like to read but not post 🙂

Christmas, Christmas Time is Here

Katie and Matt Blog

Nothing can get you in holiday mood like climbing around your roof on cold afternoon hanging cheap plastic light strands over the edge of your roof. Or maybe not, but it definitely reminds you that the big holiday is not too far away.

We decided to do something we usually don’t – put up some Christmas lights. Now, we’re not going to be winning and contests any time soon, but we are one of the few on our street. Now we just need to get some decorations on that live tree that we can’t get to stand up straight, and we’ll be in business.

For those who don’t know yet, I have passed the comprehensive exams for my degree program, and so I will truly be finished with my Master’s degree this month. Just a few more things to wrap up, and I am done. Done, done, done 🙂

Does anybody watch Heroes? That has got to be my favorite show on TV now. Well, we only really watch 3 three shows anyway, so I guess that might not be saying much. Last night’s cliffhanger (they don’t return until mid-January) was awesome. If you don’t watch Heroes, you can actually watch all episodes online here.

Update on Life

Katie and Matt Blog

It’s been a while since I’ve put anything up about our life, so here’s a quick update:

New food:
I have really developed a taste for Salt & Vinegar chips, Coconut Sobe, and dark chocolate. We recently bought a grill, so Katie has been coming up with all kinds of yummy grilled recipes. I’ve also discovered Mongolian Grills, while Katie is always finding some great Indian places to eat at.

Side jobs:
I have been working on our church’s website (http://www.mercyplace.org). I also designed a site for UT Brownsville’s School of Education (http://soe2.utb.edu). I also helped Nashville State Community College finish up a site that was mostly done (http://www.thecasefiles.org).

Music:
I recently scored the 2-disc special edition of U2’s Best of 1980-1990 from Ebay for $4. Man, awesome collection of hits and B-sides. I also got a CD by a guy named Christopher Lee Freeman, who does a mixture of sitar music with hard rock. Nice. I’m also awaiting the release of Kula Shaker‘s 3rd album. They are a Hindu rock band that my Mom actually turned me on to a couple of years ago. That’s all stuff that Katie and like to listen to. I love to piddle around MySpace and listen to buzz bands like Gnarls Barkley and OkGo. And metal bands like Firewind or Rob Rock 🙂

Entertainment:
We have checked out a new show called Heroes. It’s a really good show. My wife doesn’t always watch it, but I love it. We are also loving this year’s Amazing Race. I’m still trying to get into Lost, but it’s hard. I just can’t take weirdness for weirdness sake. I am starting to become a Stargate junkie, so I better back off from that (SG-1 and Atlantis). We also rented Serenity recently. A really good sci-fi movie, and even Katie said she enjoyed it. Uhhh… other than that, I can’t remember any good movies we’ve seen recently. Just a hand full of mediocre ones.

Random Other Stuff:
I have a MySpace page now.

Stupid White Lines

Katie and Matt Blog

Apparently, those suggestions about “not crossing double white lines” that was briefly paused on in driving school are actually laws. I got a ticket the other day for driving over a white line! I was switching lanes to get into the exit lane on my way to work, and apparently it’s not cool to do that too soon, even if it means clearing out some more room in bumper to bumper traffic. Arlington, Texas for you. It’s okay to run red lights in front of cops (I’ve seen that), and it’s okay to whiz past cops at well over the speed limit. But drive over those white lines, buddy, and you’ve got another thing coming!!!!

(I’m not bitter, am I?)

We Want Your Money

Katie and Matt Blog

Katie and I are still adjusting to Suburbia. One of the things that I can’t get used to is the large number of people knocking on our door to sell us things. Salad, bug control, lawn chemicals, you name it. They all claim to be able to save me money. But I have to spend money on their product every month in order to save. Hmmmm…..

Also, I recently got a promotion at work. I haven’t really figured out what I am supposed to be doing differently now, but at least I get a new title. Instructional Systems Specialist.

St. Patrick’s Day

Katie and Matt Blog

I guess this is a little late, but I really missed anything for St. Patrick’s Day. My Dad told me once that I am probably mostly Irish, so I guess I should have at least done something that day – ate at Bennigan’s, or something. Oh, well…. there’s always next year.

We actually just laid low due to the heavy rains. We live off of a highway exit that was closed due to flooding, but nothing came close to threatening us. Other than putting up with freaked out drivers on the road, it was a pretty low key weekend.

I have finally moved into the iPod age. I won an iPod Shuffle at a conference I went to recently. I finally got around to getting it set up, and I have to say that it is pretty cool. I can see why they are so popular. And the the big version has a screen and everything – must be almost addicting. maybe I will win one of those at another conferences.

Speaking of conferences, a proposal of mine was accepted for an Online Learning conference in Austin in June. This was my first proposal. So, this will also be my first presentation in an academic setting. The topic will be “Do-it-yourself LMS: Open-source Possibilities.” If you really want to know what that is, you can e-mail me about it 🙂

The Never Ending Winter Is Upon Us

Katie and Matt Blog

It gets a little cold in Texas, and we all shut down. I know that we aren’t even venturing out. We haven’t even done our grocery shopping for the week. It’s amazing what you can scrounge up to eat when you are motivated to stay home out of the cold.

I think the scariest thing about cold weather in Texas is driving. Or, really, the other drivers. So many people around here think they know how to handle icy roads. And then you turn on the news, and see just how pride goeth before the fall…

Tales of Suburbia

Katie and Matt Blog

Sometimes you can move across town and end up in a different world. I don’t think Katie or I have ever lived in suburbia. It’s a different world. Very nice, for the most part. The loud road next to us is getting a little tiring. Anybody know of any good sound-proofing techniques?

I think I finally have the last parts of this site completed. if you look closely, you will see that the bio sections are done, the archives are finished, the music review sections are going, even the house page has the final pictures from the re-model of our old house. Why music reviews? I just like music, so I thought I could tell everyone about some that I like.
