Could Your Food One Day Be Customized Just for You?

“Smart Nutrition” is now a thing. We know that we waste too much food, and consume all kinds of stuff we shouldn’t. Oh, and the food guides and dietary guides? We are all different in so many ways that the people that make those guides are just throwing out averages for everyone. So, of course, there is now software that will look at your specific genetics that affect what you should be eating, creating a custom menu for your specific dietary needs (see the video above). It is expensive, and we should be questioning what they do with the data, but an interesting idea. If it actually works, will schools take note and invest in this technology for students? Then there are the people that changing the actual composition of food to make it healthier. Think of lab-grown meat substitutes, but ones that actually taste and chew like meat. And then, of course, are the smart appliance like refrigerators that track your food usage to make sure you always have what you need without waste. How with this all work together? According to the article, “when our smart refrigerators are loaded with apps possessing knowledge of unique genomes, and suggest recipes accordingly, made from environmentally sustainable ingredients chosen by an artificial intelligence algorithm, that’s when the smart nutrition revolution will have finally taken hold.”

Correction on Southern Food

Katie and Matt Blog

There seems to have been some confusion over what I meant by Southern Food. At least with my family. You see, I didn’t mean that I grew up eating typical deep south fried chicken and BBQ brisket type of food. I meant I grew up eating the same type of stuff that my friends ate. Stuff like casseroles, fish sticks, baked chicken, and, of course, pizza.

Of course, my family got on to me about this while sitting at the Catfish Plantation restaurant, wolfing down a bunch of typical, deep South-type deep fried stuff. And topping it off with some good ole’ bread puddin’. 🙂

You know guys, that’s what the “comments” section is for….

British Are Addicted To Curry

Katie and Matt Blog

I found this article to be hilarious…. because it is so true:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/989256.stm

So, curry is just not good – it’s addictive? Cool.

You see, I was raised in a pretty typical southern home. Well, my Mom tried to cook more healthy food and less fried food, so not TOO typical. But I couldn’t even like Chinese food because I thought it was too “weird.” Then I took a trip to the Middle East and got to experience authentic Middle Eastern food and Indian food. I was hooked then. I also got to try some true Chinese food on a trip to India, and have been hooked since then (even though nothing in the States even comes close). I was in Darjeeling, which is near the border of China, and a cook from China had opened a good restaurant there. Or, I think he was a Chinese guy from Bhutan. I think we hit that place every other day we were there. Plus it had a great view of the Himalayan foothills around the town.

Another Free Plug

My wife makes fun of me for always writing about restaurants in this blog. So, I thought I would expand my boundaries a bit and write about a Bed & Breakfast.

Our experiences with B&B’s haven’t been that great. Some were good, but never spectacular. Well, we finally had a great experience at the St. Botolph Inn of Weatherford, TX:

http://www.stbotolphinn.com

I’ve noticed that a lot of B&B’s just take some old house and remodel it. Even if there is nothing special about the house. This B&B was in an awesome house, on a big hill, and with a great history.

We were there to celebrate our 5th anniversary. Marriage keeps getting better every year. I know some people think it’s all downhill after the first year. But we disagree. We have had to put in a lot of hard work to make it improve, but it has happen. When God puts two people together, he knows what he is doing. If you aren’t working out, then you are the one that is missing it. I have found that out so many times – if something isn’t working out right, the problem is usually me and not the other person, especially my wife.

Go Indian Food

Curry spice found to fight cancer:

“HOUSTON, Jul 12, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) — Turmeric, a spice that is a key ingredient in Indian curry dishes, contains a potent cancer-fighting agent, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

A study published in the upcoming issue of Cancer magazine related that curcumin, a chemical pigment in turmeric, helped stop the spread of breast cancer tumor cells to the lungs of mice.

Now doctors have launched clinical tests to see if it works on humans, said Bharat Aggarwal of the Department of Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, who led the study.

Earlier studies suggest that people who eat diets rich in turmeric have lower rates of breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer, Aggarwal said.

He noted that many cancers are 10 times rarer on the Indian subcontinent than in the West.

The breakthrough came as no surprise to the owner of an Indian restaurant in downtown Manhattan. Abu Syed told the Daily News: “We already knew that Indian food tastes good. But it is good to hear it can help with cancer, too. It is one more reason to eat plenty of it.””

Taste of (Crowded) Dallas

Katie and Matt Blog

We decided to get out some and go to the Taste of Dallas. I think the entire city was there, always standing in front of us, getting in our way. You ever notice that for some reason in crowds like this you always seem to end up behind the same person over ad over again? And they are usually sweaty .

It was probably a good idea, but we just aren’t crowd people. I really wanted to see Robert Randolph and the Family Band in concert, but they didn’t go on until 11:00pm and we both got really tired before then.

Cafe Nostra

Cafe Nostra

I don’t mean to turn this blog into a bunch of restaurant reviews…. but, I do like to eat. And all you Amazing Race fans will be interested in this one.

We got hooked on the Amazing Race a few seasons ago (I think the 5th one). They had two brothers on there named Marshall and Lance that “owned a pizza place in Dallas.” Well, we found that “pizza place.” It’s actually more like an Italian cafe called Cafe Nostra.

It was raining when we rushed in, so we mostly had the place to ourselves. And we were served by Lance himself. It’s a little weird knowing so much about someone that you just met. But he said that the Amazing Race was the best experience of his life. Very nice guy.

The food there was also great. If you are familiar with Waco, then this place is a little like Baris. Great Italian food at a great price. Only, the decor here is a little cooler, and it’s on a street filled with cool/hip eating places/fondue bars/whatever. We highly recommend it.

How Cool Is Too Cool?

Blue Mesa Grill Dallas

We were stuck in North Dallas, hungry. I wanted some Mexican food, so we headed down 75 to find a place to eat. We remembered this place called Blue Mesa Grill that had looked good. So we decided to go there.

I have to say that walking up to the door made me wonder “are we cool enough to go in here?” On top of that, you enter in the front door and there are three flights of stairs to go up. That means it’s a really cool place. I thought they would take one look at us and kick us out.

But, this is Texas, and even the cool places are friendly. And the food was excellent. The funny thing was that I had been to Santa Fe on a business trip a few weeks ago and we tried to find a place like this, but failed. We found a good place, but it wasn’t the style that we were looking for really. Blue Mesa was – southwestern.

We topped that off by going to a container store (yes, a whole store for just containers) and a MASSIVE Barnes & Nobles. I mean, massive. Once again, I must have looked like a hick, just gawking at the big city. Two stories, with it’s own escalators right in the middle. A music section, a movie section, and rows for every section of books (versus the few selves for each “section” that they had in Waco). This was the Mecca of bookstores, for sure.

The Amazing Race 6

Katie and Matt Blog

By the way, we love the Amazing Race! The finale is on tonight… can’t wait to see who wins. We’ve always wanted to apply to be on that show, but we’ve never found the application online! Anyway… I have an article out this month in U Monthly about a local restaurant. Katie is going to have an article out next month on Quinceneras. I actually didn’t do any articles for next month, but I helped in the writing process of two stories (Katie’s and a local soul food place).
