Over To A New Blog

Katie and Matt Blog

You might have noticed something different here.  I made some intentional changes here.  The old blog was using some self-designed code that was just getting old and hard to use.  So I decided to upgrade to a Word Press blog.  I also decided to password protect the thing so we could share more about our lives and trips we are taking.  I also had some goof from France find our site and steal nearly an entire month’s worth of bandwidth in one night.  So, I had to halt that one.  More updates and photos should be added soon.

Another New Blog: EduGeek Journal

Katie and Matt Blog

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. I have been busy launching yet another blog. My geek blog (Your Official Portal to Geekdom) will transition into something where I just blog about music and movies. Or other geeky stuff. My new site, EduGeek Journal, will focus on educational technology news and views. It is going to be a collaborative blog with colleagues of mine from other cities. We’re still kicking the tires and getting the site glitches worked out, but if you are in the education field, feel free to stop by and see what we are writing about.

New Version of the Site

Katie and Matt Blog

My wife has been letting some people know about this, so I thought I might add a link. I have been working on a new version of this blog for a while now. I finally stumbled on a design that I like, so now I actually have to start getting it functional!

I’m re-designing the site based on a concept called AJAX, which is what Google uses to make their Gmail and Maps and other stuff so fancy. I also want to change a few things, like the ‘what I am listening to now’ into just ‘favorite albums’ (because we never really have time to change them). Also, seeing that we are very irregular in posting stuff, I want to create a feature that allows people to get an email (if they want) whenever we add a new post. Yes, I know all of you tech people out there know how to use the RSS feed for this site, but that hasn’t proven very popular. And it needs fixin’, too (if you use the RSS feed, you are being led to a REALLY old version of this site).

If you want to leave comments, you should try to do it on the new page. It’s all in fancy AJAX now – no pop-ups, no reloading pages.

Also, I have to point out that you might get errors on the page if you happen to access it after I mess something up 🙂

Three Year Anniversary

Katie and Matt Blog

Not of my wedding, but of this blog. Also, I noticed three things:

  • The record for most posts (8) was set in the first month of this blog, so I really need to break that.
  • I’ve never used the ‘Web Site’ category, or the ‘Politics’ category for that matter. I wonder why I created those?
  • I’ve never used the cool buttons that change font colors. Guess it works.

Just some random stuff. So now what can I do to break the post record?

Back to Life

Katie and Matt Blog

No, we weren’t trying to open up a new Internet search service. Our site was gone for a while. The registration expired and I thought I was using an Internet hosting package with registration. But, now we’re back. And I learned that Internet hosting companies actually believe that their customers read invoices and pay attention to the name of the hosting package they sign up for. I’ve done enough customer service work to know that’s not realistic. But I’ve also done enough to know that I should actually do those things. Oh, well….

And, for those programmers out there, I found out that the “whois” directory is not very accurate. I was bounced around 2 or 3 “partner” companies before I found the real registrar of this site. At least they were all nice about it.

Happy New Year

Katie and Matt Blog

Happy New Year! I guess it seems like I have been quiet a lot recently with this site. The truth is, I have been spending my free time to get the code for this blog finally finished! I think I might have bit off more than I can chew with this thing. But soon it will be finished (I hope), and I can get back to regular posts.

If you look closely, you will notice that the archives are up and running. I am going to make a few changes so that it is easier to scroll though them, but at least they are there now.

Also, most of the lists on the left of this page are database-driven now, so hopefully they will get updated regularly. Also, I have added all of our old newsletters to the newsletter section. The pics aren’t there yet, but they are coming soon.

Technical Difficulties

Katie and Matt Blog

For some reason, all of the functions on this site – comments, newsletter, etc – all quit working. I had to insert one line of code on several pages to get it to work, but now it does. Except for the fact that I can’t add pictures to posts now. I guess they changed some security settings at my host without telling me. Got to love that.

Site Maintenance

Katie and Matt Blog

I finally cracked into the PHP and fixed the comments page so that you can use any punctuation. I had to get that one fixed for Creecy. He has enough stress with living in the ‘burbs, so I don’t want to add anymore 🙂

Also, I fixed some of the broken links in the section under Web Sites I have Designed. (thanks to my brother for the heads up on that one)
