Recent TV Shows I Am Enjoying

Your Official Portal to Geekdom Banner

Guess I am just now down to one post a month?  I have many thoughts on many things, just no time to blog about them here.  But it has been a while since I talked about geeky TV shows, so here I go with some of the TV shows I have been enjoying recently.

Sanctuary

I caught this as a free web series (Sanctuary For All), then it got picked up by SyFy and I lost track. Not having Cable does that to you. I did pick it up on Hulu recently, and now I am hooked. Sanctuary is a story about a group of people who deal with myths and legends. The premise is that these myths are usually true and that monsters are real.  They are typically just genetic mutations. The Sanctuary building is a place for these creatures to be kept safe from the world, or vice versa depending on the case.  Not your typical Sci-Fi – I like it.

Stargate Universe

I have always been a Stargate fan, but the new series is really good. They took all of the lessons they learned from BSG and previous Stargates, and made a better series out of them. Not perfect, but very engaging.  Basically, this large group of people were forced through a special Stargate that landed them on a ship on the other side of the Universe (not galaxy… universe).  Oh, and they can’t control the ship. They can submit requests for supplies and the ship will occasionally stop at planets that can meet those requests – but that is not always a given. They are surviving fighting, getting attack by weird aliens, and all kinds of fun stuff.  In most SciFi shows, the people get control over whatever situation there is in the pilot episode and then deal with issues arising from that. In SG:U – they are never in control.  Cool stuff.

Caprica

I do enjoy the new BSG series. It is not perfect, but an interesting look at a world down the road technology-wise from ours. Interesting exploration of the impact of virtual worlds on human society. Needs to pick up the pace some, but still entertaining.

Lost

okay, Lost is over… but I have to comment on the finale. I think I figured out, like most people, that we really didn’t want answers or an ending. We just wanted to explore mysteries.  There ended up being no way to answer everything, or make an ending that everyone would be happy with.  I think they did a god job. No, I don’t agree with the theology of life and death they presented.  That is not the point of watching a drama like this.  And it took me a few days to fully figure out how it all worked out.  Now I have to find a way to watch the epilogue about Hurley ruling the island without actually purchasing the season 6 DVD 🙂

FYI – Inception is one of the best movies I have seen in a while. But it deserves a post of its own.
