This story is a bit older, but I wanted to revisit it today in connection to growing educational interests in virtual reality, wearables, Internet of things, and other innovations. All of these devices are going to start stretching our needs for connectivity. Wi-Fi is good for surfing the net, but what happens when you need the net to stream a high-quality 3-D immersive simulation? Li-Fi is a new idea that uses regular light bulbs to transmit data at a rate that is a hundred times faster than Wi-Fi. Of course, someone stands in front of the light and you lose your signal, so there are downsides. But on the flip side, you don’t have to worry about your signal traveling through walls, so there is also an increased level of security. As the article points out, this would probably be used in conjunction with Wi-Fi and cellular signals. But the overall idea of using everyday LED lights to transmit data has fascinating possibilities.
