Correction on Southern Food

Katie and Matt Blog

There seems to have been some confusion over what I meant by Southern Food. At least with my family. You see, I didn’t mean that I grew up eating typical deep south fried chicken and BBQ brisket type of food. I meant I grew up eating the same type of stuff that my friends ate. Stuff like casseroles, fish sticks, baked chicken, and, of course, pizza.

Of course, my family got on to me about this while sitting at the Catfish Plantation restaurant, wolfing down a bunch of typical, deep South-type deep fried stuff. And topping it off with some good ole’ bread puddin’. 🙂

You know guys, that’s what the “comments” section is for….

  1. ‘got on to’….? I wanted to clarify what you considered a ‘typical southern’ home and cooking. You did, however, quallify it by the ‘not TOO typical’ statement. : ) I also did not realize you were using your friends families for the comparison. When I moved to Texas…back in the olden days…typical Southern cooking meant battered and fried. No matter what it was. It did not mean casseroles, pizza, veggies other than potatoes, etc.

  2. Here’s a funny sync. The day after I made the comment about what exactly is ‘southern cooking’ I was at the dentist having my teeth cleaned. The hygenist was talking about her husband & cooking. She said “I can cook up a storm southern style, frying everything, but anything else someone else has to do” Course I could not respond…having my mouth full of her finger, etc. It was just too funny to hear her unsolicited comment about Southern cooking.

  3. I guess a lot of people out there still think southern means fried. I worked for so many years at Black-Eyed Pea, where they always advertised as being southern-style food. Most of what they serve isn’t fried.

  4. Come on people…just say it. you KNOW you are thinking it. The difference in the two “styles” of southern food is color. Black southern food is fried chicken, hog moss, pig feet, and wateromeron…yes, wateromeron. But cracke..eh, i mean, white southern food is what Matt was talking about, and what Black eyed pea mostly serves. Stuff like casseroles. There….I hope i offended SOMEONE with that. hehe. But you know it’s true.

  5. So, Jeff – since you are half black and from the south, does that mean you eat pigs feet and “wateromeron” casseroles? Mmmmm… mouth watering. By the way – edit your MySpace comments before you shock my wife again! Oh, yeah – the hygenist that my Mom is talking about is white. Or if it’s the one that I think it is, I went to MCC with her.

  6. Yes, that is the hygenist you went to school with. I just remembered a white acquaintance who is a native Waco Texan who battered and fried EVERYTHING! I remember my mouth dropping open as she battered and fried wedges of cabbage. I asked her if there was anything she did not fry. She had a hard time coming up with something, and finally came up with ‘lettuce’. What the heck is hog moss?
