Lesson 9: Analyze Online Media
Lesson 10 »

Before the Lesson:
Print out one copy of the What Did They Really Say? handout [PDF, 11 kb] for each student.

You will also need to prepare a short warm-up lecture about how some of the messages that we see online about drugs or alcohol are inappropriate and/or inaccurate. Also, be prepared to answer questions related to lesson content.

Instructional Steps:
1.  Lecture about how some of the messages that we see online about drugs or alcohol are inappropriate and/or inaccurate
2.  Analyze web messages – learners will be taken to a series of web sites that either contain inappropriate messages about alcohol or drugs, or to sites that are designed to explore these messages already.  Learners will answer questions on a worksheet about these sites.
3.  Identify false messages – based on the questions that they answer, learners will identify what false messages they are encountering on the web sites they have visited.
4.  Record facts – learners will record what they have learned in a Moodle blog entry.

Overview:

Pre-instructional Activities:
The lesson will begin with a motivational activity to gain the learner’s interest.  The activity will begin with a short lecture about how some of the messages that we see online about drugs or alcohol are inappropriate and/or inaccurate.

Content Presentation:
After the learners are logged in to the class, the rest of the activity is self-guided.  Learners will be able to download and print up a copy of the worksheet that they need to use in analyzing inappropriate messages.

Learner Participation:
Learners will answer the questions on their analysis worksheet.  Learners will visit the supplied web sites to help answer questions on the worksheet.  Learners will then take everything they have learned so far and create a blog entry using the Moodle blog function.

Assessment:
The learner will demonstrate to the instructor that he/she is successful by completing all required elements on the Lesson 9 grading rubric.

Post-Instructional Activities
Learners will be encouraged to think about how they could create a message that would expose the truth about one or more of the inappropriate messages they encountered in this lesson.
