Georg Graetz
Georg Graetz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Uppsala University, a Research Affiliate at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), an Associate at the Centre for Economic Performance (CEP) at the London School of Economics, and an Academic Member of the Economics of Higher Education Network. He obtained his PhD in Economics in 2014 and a BSc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics in 2009, both from the London School of Economics. His research interests include technological change, earnings inequality, and the economics of education.

Title: The Polarization of Employment: Explanations and Implications
Abstract:
For at least three decades, employment has shifted away from middle-wage occupations and towards the “extremes” of low- and high-wage jobs. I first document this fact for the US and other developed countries, drawing on a large empirical literature. I then introduce the explanations that have been proposed, including some of my own work. I argue that technological change is likely the main cause, but that there is still work to be done in understanding the precise mechanisms – this is particularly important for our ability to anticipate how coming technological changes might affect labor markets. Finally, I discuss implications for individuals’ choices of education and career, and implications for education policy.
