Lesson 1: Body Type Research

Lesson 2 »

Before the Lesson:
Make sure that you have access to a computer lab with a computer for every student. These computers need to have Internet access. Go to the Moodle site set up by the lesson administrator and sign in using the username and password provided. If your network has a filter, go through each lesson and click on every external link to make sure that you have permission to view each site in the lesson. If not, submit a request to the network administrator to access the sites.

You will also need to guide the students through the registration process:

  1. Make sure the administrator has set the authenticatiopn method to "none" before students access the site
  2. Go to the front page of moodle
  3. Find the log in section, and enter a username and password (if it is already taken, the system will say so)
  4. Click on the Log In button
  5. Fill out all required information in the profile section and click on Update Profile
  6. Find the link on the bottom left of the page that says "Health Class Online."
  7. Moodle will ask "You are about to enrol yourself as a member of this course.
Are you sure you wish to do this?" Click on "Yes."

Once all of your students have registered, let your administrator know so that the authentication method can be closed.

You will also need to prepare a short warm-up presentation on how overweight and obesity issues can affect everyone’s life and an introduction to blogging. Some students may know what a blog is, and others may not. Some students may be familiar with blogs that exist in other popular websites such as MySpace, so pointing out that these functions are basically the same can be helpful. Also, be prepared to answer questions related to lesson content.

Instructional Steps:
1. Presentation on how overweight and obesity issues can affect everyone’s life and introduction to blogging.
2. Register for Moodle account – learners will need to go to the web site for this class and create an account in Moodle.  They will then register for the online class.
3. Search for facts online – learners will view a lesson on how to perform a good Internet search.
4. Find appropriate sites – after viewing a lesson on what appropriate sites are for Internet research, learners will begin their search for facts about body type.
5. Record facts – learners will record the facts that they find.
6. Determine body type – learners will go to a site about BMI and follow the steps for determining their body type
7.  All information from this lesson will be recorded in a Moodle blog tool.

Overview:

Pre-instructional Activities:
The lesson will begin with a motivational activity to gain the learner’s interest.  The activity will begin with a short presentation on how overweight and obesity issues can affect everyone’s life and an introduction to blogging.  This will be followed by a brief description of the tool to be used (Moodle), and a short guided registration time.

Content Presentation:
After the learners are registered for the class, the rest of the activity is self-guided.  Questions about Internet searches or the appropriateness of sites found need to be directed back to the online lessons.  Learners are free to skip these if they feel that they know the information in them, but any questions about these processes should be directed back to the lessons.

Learner Participation:
The learner will guide themselves through web searches for the proper information.  Learners will be responsible for recording facts that they need as they conduct the search.  Learners are also responsible for going through the lessons and activities online.

Assessment:
The learner will demonstrate to the instructor that he/she is successful by completing all required elements on the Lesson 1 grading rubric.

Post-Instructional Activities:
The information from this lesson will be helpful in the next lesson.
