EDTC 6332 » Part 2 » Learner Context & Analysis

Learning Environment
The instruction for these lessons will take place in a computer lab located in the high school campus.  This lab room will have computer desks and chairs for the students with projection equipment and computer station for the instructor.  Each student will have their own computer with access to the Internet and a printer.  A website will be set up using the Moodle Learning Management System to provide online content.  Each class meeting will last 90 minutes.

Intended Audience
The intended audience for these lessons is sophomore and junior level high school students taking a required Health course.  The students will have some prior knowledge of how to use computers and the Internet.  The age range is between 15 and 18 years old.  These classes will focus on helping students apply health concepts into their life.

Overreaching Instructional Goal
The student will analyze health information and apply strategies for enhancing and maintaining personal health throughout the life span.

Specific Goal
The students will gain knowledge of how to apply information about health concepts, such as nutrition, exercise, drug, and alcohol, to their everyday life.  Students will also have the chance to apply what they learn to their life and analyze the outcomes.

Feedback
Students don’t understand why they have to learn health.  Some students seem very interested, and have many insights into the psychological aspects of health.  Some athletes are interested in participating in exercise lessons, while other students have no desire at all to exercise.  Some students are interested in eating healthier; other students are not willing to change eating behaviors.  All students seem more interested in topic of drugs and alcohol.  A lot of students have mentioned that they don’t have computers at home, but they have learned computer skills at school.

Impact
This information will impact my production of the project and curriculum and instruction decision making in several ways.  The main impact is that I will need to find a good balance of repetition (for instructional purposes) and providing a variety of activities (to increase interest and motivation).  Many students will be interested in the lessons just because they are on the computer, and that will be a change from classroom instructions.  Also, students at this age have a wide range of reading levels, so I will need to find a way to keep the reading at an acceptable level without “dumbing it down.”

Learning Context Analysis

Compatibility
The lab room available has all equipment needed to deliver these lessons.  There are also enough computers available to allow each learner to have their own personal workstation.  These computers also have all necessary programs to run the lesson components.

Adaptability for Delivery Purposes
The lab to be used will have everything needed to adapt to the lessons.  This includes Internet access and overhead projectors for instructor demonstrations.

Learning-site Constraints
One of the main constraints in the lab to be used will be Internet filtering.  These filters will probably let most sites through, but the instructor will need to check to make sure (and submit block sites for consideration to the appropriate departments).

Performance Context Analysis

Managerial Support
The main support for this class will be from the instructor.  Learners will be able to ask questions at any time, and the instructor will be there during school hours to provide feedback.  Learners that go through these lessons after school hours (such as those that are absent) will have to wait until the next school day to receive support.  Overall, this school also has great support from the administration for any integration of technology into the class.

Physical Aspects of Site
These lessons will totally depend on the learners having access to a computer lab.  Many learners do not have access to computers outside of the school, so they can not be expected to perform these lessons at home.

Social Aspects of the Site
Learners will be working alone on some lessons and in small groups on others.  Most of the products from each lesson will only be visible to the instructor, but some may require learners to create a product that will be presented to the class.  These learners will be the first to go through this type of online lesson.

Relevance of Skills
The skills taught in this lesson will be based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which all high school students are required to be taught.  In addition to this, learners will gain knowledge about different aspects of health that will be helpful in their life in general.
