Capstone Project: Part I Proposal
EDTC 6332 Practicum in Educational Technology Fall 2006
Matt Crosslin

Performance Problem
Texas high school students are currently only required to take one half year health course.  Health is a complex subject that needs more attention.  National reports show that obesity is increasing in teenagers, which is leading to a substantial increase in health-related diseases.

One of the main problems with offering health as a face to face class is that students will have to learn health concepts out of real life context.  For example, students that are sitting in a class room learning about nutrition can not apply that information to a meal at that moment.  Therefore, health education needs to extend beyond the classroom.

Viable Solution

  Solution 1 Solution 2
Description of the solution

Transform face to face health classes into online classes.

Transition face to face classes into hybrid classes that can be continued as a self-directed class after the class is over.

Internal (personal) strengths in relation to the solution

Background and experience in designing online lessons.

Background and experience in designing online lessons, also experience with teaching hybrid classes.

Internal (personal) weaknesses in relation to the solution

Little knowledge or experience with health education.

Little knowledge or experience with health education.

External (environmental) opportunities in relation to the solution

Online education is growing.  More students have computers and most students are computer literate.  Interest in health education is growing.

Online education is growing.  More students have computers and most students are computer literate.  Interest in health education is growing.  Schools have labs that students can use to complete online content.  Schools are more open to allowing classes to use hybrid content.

External (environmental) threats in relation to the solution

Public schools are slow to make sweeping changes like this.  Students may take advantage of online classes and not truly do any work.  Many students may not have access to computers at home.

Students may take advantage of online classes and not truly do any work.

Your chosen solution

Solution 2

Reasons

Public schools probably won’t be quick to change core classes like this to totally online.  Hybrid solutions are a better option for the teachers involved.

Deliverables
The final project will be content and activities loaded into a Moodle Learning Management System.  These will be activities that student complete once a week.  Some of the activities will be ongoing journal-type activities that allow students to track changes over time.  Class will also include “ongoing” lesson types that allow students to continue using the knowledge that they have learned.
